Randall Jamrok – Tabla

Randall Jamrok is an up-and-coming tabla player based in Chicago and student of Pandit Samir Chatterjee.

He is collaborating with Siddhesh Kudale (vocal), Sonny Patel (Bansuri), and Akash Joshi (harmonium) to create the classical group “The Chicago Jamrok Collective”–which is based in tradition but expanding the boundaries of Raga and Tala.

Individual Bios:

Randall Jamrok is an up-and-coming tabla player in the South Asian classical music tradition. He is from an Indiana suburb of Chicago and is dedicated to the vibrant Chicago South Asian classical music scene. Randall began his studies of tabla in 1999 in Jackson Heights, Queens, NY with Pt. Samir Chatterjee of the Farrukhabad Gharana.

Siddhesh Kudale is a Hindustani vocalist who started his musical training at the age of four in Baramati under the tutelage of Sri Abasaheb Parkale and Sushri Jayashree Kulkarni. Later he pursued learning music under the tutelage of Pt. Mukund Marathe of Pune in the Gwalior and Kirana gharana style of music and Pt. SP Acharya at Gandharva Mahavidyalay, New Delhi. He was bestowed the Sangeet Visharad from Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya at the age of seventeen, and now learns under the tutelage of Sushri Aishwarya Rao of Mumbai. He is an Urban Planner by profession and works in Chicago, IL.

Dr. Sonny Patel is an up-and-coming bansuri (bamboo flute) player in the North Indian classical style. Sonny studies under Maestro Lyon Leifer, who’s guru was the late Pandit Devendra Murdeshwar, disciple of Pandit Pannalal Ghosh. Sonny plays the 7-hole style of bansuri originally developed by Pandit Pannalal Ghosh. Sonny has performed alongside Rev. Father M.P. George (Director of the Shruti School of Liturgical Music in Kottayam, Kerala, India), the Akshaya Music Academy in Chicago, the South Asian Music Ensemble of the University of Chicago, and Randall Jamrock. Sonny also plays Hindi filmi music from the golden era, in a surf-punk Bollywood cover band called “Do the Needful.” Sonny has performed at venues such as Harvard, The Logan Center, The International House, Rockefeller Chapel, Mandel Hall, The Drake, Soho House Chicago, The Hideout, The Subterranean, Montrose Saloon, Chicagoland temples, among others. 

Akash Joshi is a Data Product Manager and devoted musician who began his journey in Hindustani Classical music at the age of five, learning from Shri Jagdish Soni and later training in piano under Shri Kantibhai Sonchhatra. He is currently under the tutelage of the esteemed Manjiri Vaishampayan in the Jaipur gharana tradition. Playing piano, keyboards, and harmonium, Akash explores a wide spectrum of genres from New Age Contemporary and Classic Rock to Hindustani Classical, Semi-Classical, Bollywood, and Folk. He views instrumental music as a transcendent force that bridges hearts beyond words, language and borders. Outside of his professional and musical pursuits, Akash is also a participant in Chicago’s chess and theater communities.
